PCA
The Pharmacy PCA screen will allow the provider to define or change the pre-defined protocol for the PCA medication. If there is a protocol that is already attached to the medication item, the protocol will appear in the PCA Medication Order Edit screen but may be altered if needed. When the medication is selected for editing, a message will appear indicating what fields need to be addressed.
•Select PCA medication from Pending orders. For items that do not have all fields of a pre-defined protocol attached, the following message(s) will appear, with the field that is needed. Select OK to define the PCA Protocol.

•All fields may be edited. Patient Administered Dose, Lockout Interval, 4-Hour Limit, and Initial Syringe Amount are all required fields and will appear in red if not addressed. A warning message will appear if any of these fields are not addressed at the time of selecting Save. There are multiple lines for text instructions to be entered.
▪Medication Name: This will display the medication name as it is set up in the hospital item master
▪Route: The route will display the default route for the item. The drop-down will display any additional routes as they are setup in the hospital item master.
▪Units: The units field will set the display for the Bolus, Patient Administered Dose, Continuous Infusion Rate, 4-hour Limit, Amount Purged in Tubing, and Initial Syringe Amount.
▪Loading Dose: Populates from PCA setup, but may be edited by user
▪Patient Administered Dose: Populates from PCA setup, but may be edited by user
▪Continuous Infusion Rate: Populates from PCA setup, but may be edited by user
▪Lockout Interval: Populates from PCA setup, but may be edited by user; will always display in minutes
▪4-hour Limit: Populates from PCA setup, but may be edited by user
▪Amount Purged in Tubing: Populates from PCA setup, but may be edited by user
▪Initial Syringe Amount: Populates from PCA setup, but may be edited by user
▪Instructions: Up to four lines of comments may be entered as readable in the pharmacy application.
•Once all the fields have been reviewed/addressed, the provider may select from the options at the bottom of the screen.
▪The blue back arrow will return the provider to the Search Options screen. If it is selected before the item is saved, it will return without saving changes, but a message stating "Are you sure you want to exit without saving?" will appear as a warning that information may be lost.
▪Update will save changes made to the order. The provider would then select the blue back arrow to return to the Search Options screen.
▪Clear will clear all free-text fields.
▪Remove will remove the PCA order from the pending items list.
▪Address Clinical Monitoring will open the Clinical Monitoring screen to address any required overrides and view other clinical check results that do not require an override (if present).
